Aunty Ann

Created by Nancy 3 years ago

We (Eric, Alec and I) got to know our Aunty Ann from visits she made to us in South Africa. As children we looked forward to her coming, as we had no other family in the country.  Her visits usually included a family holiday somewhere in the country. In the early days we went to the seaside however my strongest childhood memories of Aunty Ann are hiking in the Easter Transvaal and the Drakensburg.

Ann was an energetic and lively character; she was game for anything and seemed to have endless energy. She had a jaunty little step which was rather hard to keep up with! A few years ago, I visited Ann and John at the Chocolate factory and Ann was still as nippy as ever and never missed the opportunity for a walk.

I remember visits to Batchworth in the early 1990s, walking on the moors, eating Ann’s delicious food, tasting wines from John’s cellar, going to the opera in London, eating a pub lunch at Hampstead Heath and later, Ann and John attending my wedding in Cape Town;  all of these memorable days spent together.

Ann always had smile and cheeky glint in her bright blue eyes as if looking for the next adventure. Thank you Aunty Ann for all your visits over the years. I will miss you very much. All my love, Nancy Dorrat
